Gawd, keep up! ![]() All seriousness though, I agree with going desktop instead. Having looked at some laptops lately (for a friend) it seems way more cost effective to go with a custom built desktop.

Ive been pretty lazy as far as researching goes. I got promoted and it was supposed to be effective last October so now im getting about a $1000 back pay and Its burning a hole in my pocket.
This sort of setup looks appealing to me, I dont care about Windows 7 though. I'd probably get vista...and a Blu Ray player. And i'll put it together myself. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicat...2&Sku=G180-0124

You would have to hold a gun to my head before I agreed to pay any amount of money for a laptop. Even then I would just take the bullet. Laptops are overpriced, undersized crap. Nothing more. I do computer service in my area, I won't even open anyone's laptop, I only do software service on them, I basically tell them they got soaked for an outdated novelty that will cost them an arm and a leg to service if the hardware breaks down, which it is guranteeed to do. Reading your post, I can't believe you would buy a second laptop after the first only lasting two years. I built this PC almost 4 years ago, it would be worth $2,500 retail, I built it for $1,200 with Windows XP and the monitor. I dont expect it will break down except maybe the power supply and that is cheap to replace. Unless you are constantly on business trips or a student that really needs to have a laptop, there is no practical use for it. If you want to make spreadsheets at work or do powerpoint presentations for your tupperware parties or pyramid scams, then a laptop is for you. If you want to play video games, build a desktop PC yourself from wholesale parts or have someone you know that knows computers do it for cheap.Or like someone said, shop around for a pre-built one with decent specs for cheap, the manufacturers and software makers have shot themselves in the foot because processing power doubles every 18 months, but people won't shill out $2,000 every 2 years for a new PC especially because Bill Gates needs an new ivory backscratcher. (he does you know)

Yeah but a desktop sits on a desk and gets dusted out every once and a while and all the components are easily accessible.
A laptop is very compressed and you move it around a hell of a lot more which makes it more prone to damage (all mine have taken the occasional roughness). I was in no way babying my laptops. My last gateway I stuffed into a dufflebag wrapped in a blanket. The duffle full of stuff being thrown around, you could see the outline of the laptop from outside. Yet it made it another year after that, speakers, monitor and all. The mobility is priceless. Wanna have a LAN party? Easy as hell. No internet connection, nearly every library has free wifi. Try picking up wireless networks with a desktop. Yeah, roger. Everyone i know has laptops. I'm not even exaggerating, nobody im around doesnt have one. And you're wrong that laptops are overpriced. It costs some money to make things so much smaller. When you factor in the monitor (mine is 17 inch), its hardly more expensive than buying a comparable desktop. Its too easy to use external hard drives. That being said you dont just go to best buy and buy whatever piece of crap they offer.

If newegg taxes your state, then go with tigerdirect, or vice-versa

Hmmm.. Interesting. I hooked up my laptop to my 32 inch T.V. with an HDMI cable and oddly enough the extreme blurring effects of my graphics card going to crap are not present on the T.V. screen while still present on the monitor. Why didnt I think of this before? Now I can play the dark RnL maps which were too much before (everything turned so blurry I had to look straight up into the sky to find "disconnect" on the menu. Still getting a new desktop though.

I play on my three year old MacBook Pro, runs games just fine. Can't wait for steam to come to mac so I don't have to boot into windows.
