Default November 15th Road to the Future

Welcome back everyone! It is November 15th and time again for the mid-month Road to the Future.

History Moment: In the Months of September-November the 18th Airborne Corp was knee deep in battle. History calls it Operation Market Garden, the men of the Airborne called it Hell's Highway! The Famous E Company 506th spent time on an Island in Holland, well sort of.

Quote:
From 2 October to 25 November 1944 , the company held a static defensive line in Holland in an area known as "The Island." The 506th, which is Easy's parent unit, occupied a gap in the British lines that was previously held by a British division that was roughly four times the size of the regiment. Easy had only 130 men to hold a sector that was 3Km long. Of the 130, there were only 98 officers and men remaining on 25 November 1944 when the company was pulled off the line and sent to France for R&R in the French town of Mourmelon.(1)

This was part of an
Quote:
audacious plan concocted by British Field Marshal Montgomery that would be the first major daylight air assault attempted by a military power since Germany's attack on Crete.British Field Marshal Montgomery similar to the Germans assault of four years earlier, the Allies initial plan for September 17,1944 was to use the paratroopers and glidermen of the 82nd and 101st U.S. Airborne Divisions and England's First Airborne Division in a daring daylight drop into Holland. The airborne Allied troops were to seize roads, bridges and the key communication cities of Eindhoven, Nijmegen and Arnhem, thus cutting Holland in half and clearing a corridor for British armoured and motorized columns all the way to the German border.

Although XVIII Airborne Corps achieved their objectives the plan was overly ambitious from a logistical standpoint and the operation did not achieve it ultimate objective.(2)

After the "pulling out of Holland" the boys of the Airborne were sent to the back for Rest, refit and re-enforcements. It wasn't long before they were sent to a little town called Bastonge. Once they survived that, it was on to Operation Varsity and Germany itself.

Like always, Eero has been working hard on a little bit of everything. A couple weeks ago he decided to take up the task of skinning the paratrooper model that was revealed way back in April. Just recently he showed us some pictures of his progress, but as you all know, the guy's a real perfectionist and doesn't want to share any real screenshots just yet. We did manage to get something from him to put in the RttF - this teaser of the boot diffuse texture.

In other news, Toni Kreska has been finishing up the port of St. Marie Dumont. The usual business of doing a couple fixes here and there, some touch ups, and a creek? Yes, there is more to this port than you think. Take a look for yourself.

Now for the RTTF Q and A's.

1. Will there be an Omaha map made by the dev team?

There is currently no work being done or plans for an Omaha map as paratroopers didn't fight at the beaches.

2. Will Beta testing ever open again?

We have all the beta testers we currently need. There may be changes or openings at a later date, but there haven't been any decisions yet.

3. Are there any plans to make the movement speeds variable? e.g. A rifleman would move faster than a machine gunner or ammo based.

The speed of the player is based on the load he is carrying and the class he is. While a machine gunner may generally move slower than a Rifleman, this isn't always the case. If the Rifleman has more gear on and/or the MG Drops the gun, the MG could move faster. This is an example of the current system where speed of your character will factor in how much ammo you have.

If you have any questions that you would like featured in the next RTTF, PM the Public Relations department (Hunnicutt or Murphy). We will do our best to get your questions answered. That is all we have to show you for this mid-month RTTF, so stick around for the next update on December 1st!

Nice work Eero (as always :P).

St. Marie is one of my favourite maps, so now I'm just hoping it's still after the next release. But ye... great pics too. That stonewall and river looks fantastic. Good work guys!

Dangerous stuff when it comes to realism. I personally liked that there were no speed boost in the current alpha4 for dropping a weapon.

Some people WILL drop their main weapon to run faster at first wave to reach an unexpected tactical position. Now I am no historian but I don't think this was done in ww2, or am I wrong? (I hope I am wrong because that would make it more true to realism )

Bringing in realism in this way might kill the realism in another way =(.

This is an issue for those who want realism in insurgency, and there the main weapons are more powerful than the pistols compared to RnL. So I can only imagine that this will be a bigger issue here, and a bigger gain for dropping the main weapon (unless the speed boost is tactically negligible).

I don't think it's THAT dangerous. Besides the speed boost probably isn't anything extreme. If the player drops his weapon to cap an objective, obviously he'll be partially unarmed.

Dropping your weapon to retreat, like a grenade beside you, makes a bit of sense. But even then I doubt it'd make a difference.

We will see, but I can only hope that some of the other skilled testers are aware of such tactics and how to execute them to test it.

This should not be treated lightly.

Just increase the stamina, not the speed, simple. By the way remeber the scene in SPR when they drop some of their gear before assaulting that radio station?

marie looks so beautiful now...

also I agree with deadman, a stamina increase would be better than a speed increase.

it isn't a boost per say. Look at it this way, would you run faster/father with 50 lbs on your back or 10 Lbs on your back. Sure if you drop your gun you will move quicker, but that will not help you when you run into Jerry and his K98. Like in real life, you can do it, but it is not advisable.

Well, you do as you please. As long as people will not whine about it being unrealistic with people charing with the pistol I'm fine with it =).
